Answers to Frequenty Asked Questions
At Acry-Tech Coatings, our customers want reliable answers when choosing the right finish for their speaker cabinets, road cases, stage gear, and touring equipment. That’s why DuraTex® protective coatings have become the industry standard—trusted by professional audio manufacturers, musicians, DJs, and DIY builders worldwide.
Whether you’re building a custom subwoofer enclosure, refurbishing old speaker cabinets, or protecting road cases that travel from venue to venue, DuraTex offers a durable, water-based, textured coating that is specifically engineered to handle the demands of the live performance and pro audio industry. Unlike thin paint or fragile coverings, DuraTex is scratch-resistant, water-resistant, and built to last, giving your gear a professional finish that looks as good as it performs.
Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions we receive about DuraTex products, application methods, and performance benefits.
Q: How do I open the gallon bucket?
A: We made a video to help. See below.
Q: What surface can we apply DuraTex to?
A: DuraTex is designed to be applied to wood, metal (We recommend a water-based primer like Zinsser 123 for metal), and fiberglass.
Q: How many coats do I apply?
A: We recommend 2 coats for sprayer and roller grader, and 3 for exterior use.
Q: How many days to cure?
A: Depending on the humidity, but typically 3 days.
Q: What kind of wood filler works?
A: Elmer’s Carpenter’s Color Change Wood Filler. It dries very hard, and you will need to sand it down. It’s compatible with DuraTex.
Q: What glue can we use?
A: We don’t know what is compatible. Remove as much glue as possible and perform an adhesion test.
Q: Do you need primer?
A: No.
Q: Can I use the coating at any temperature?
A: No. The surface temperature should be 65 degrees or greater.
Q: Can I use any brush to apply?
A: No. We recommend using our textured roller due to its texture-building formula.
Q: Can I apply a roller grade smooth without a texture?
A: Yes, use a smooth foam roller only. The nap roller will leave fibers.
Q: Can I use any spray gun?
A: You can use a spray gun, but we recommend a 2 1/2- or 5-gallon pressure pot system or an airless system, as the formula is too thick. The tip can not be smaller than 1.7mm. Check out our video for more info.
Q: Can I dilute the DuraTex Roller Grade?
A: NO. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU DILUTE OUR FORMULA. It will change the chemical composition. We recommend using the DuraTex Spray Grade if you want a thinner formula.
Q: Do I need to let the coating dry before I apply a second coat?
A: Yes, depending on the temperature and humidity, as DuraTex is water-based and can air dry. Generally, you can reapply a second coat within an hour. A complete cure was achieved within 3 days.
Q: Is DuraTex coating waterproof?
A: No, it’s water-resistant.
Q: Is DuraTex UV protective?
A: UV coating can be added with an extra charge.
Q: Can I get DuraTex in any colors?
A: No. We cannot use any metallic or pearl colors (including iridescence).
Q: What do I need to give you if I want custom colors?
A: You will need brand and color numbers. Example: Sherwin-Williams Dover White SW6385
